The Testimony of Birds

Pastor Gary Oser

For a few months, I want to return to sharing with you some amazing things from creation that give evidence of a Creator. I am sharing from a book entitled, A Closer Look at the Evidence, written by Richard and Tina Kleiss.

Every feature and function of a bird’s body testifies to God’s design. From the moment they lay their eggs to their yearly migrations across the globe, birds provide clear evidence of their Creator.

A bird by the name of the Guillemot does not build nests. Instead, they lay their eggs on bare, windswept rocks. Their eggs are shaped in such a way, however, that when the wind blows they spin in place rather than roll off the rocks. A coincidence? No! God, their Creator, programmed them to form their eggs in just the right shape to survive the harsh environment where they are laid.

Every fall the youngsters of another bird, the American Golden Plover, make an astounding 3,000 mile flight across the Pacific Ocean from Alaska to the island of Hawaii, with no parent to guide them. They fly through darkness, clouds and storms, and land at the correct destination. Their bodies are so efficient that they only burn two ounces of body weight on their incredible 3,000 mile flight.

A third kind of bird, Manx Shearwaters, which nest off the coast of Wales, were tagged and released at points for beyond their usual range. Once was turned loose in Boston, some 3,200 miles from home. In just 12.5 days the bird returned to its nest, having traveled 250 miles a day starting from a place thousands of miles from where it had never been before. What’s more, based on the known speed of the bird, it must have flown directly home across the open ocean.

Could these things have just randomly happened? No! They are the work of a Creator God who says in Psalm 50:11, “I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine” (NIV).
